RUN / HENCH

Its one thing to mastermind one hugely successful midweek night, but add to that the creation of another massive monthly midweeker too and you really have to respect the promotion team behind D&B party Run and Dubstep throwdown HENCH. It’s easy to forget Run sometimes given its weekly presence in the city, but without fail week in, week out it packs the ravers into Native to witness a seemingly endless conveyor belt of D&B royalty - on a Tuesday no less. Its one of the few nights in Bristol which has a reputation outside of the city, something which is becoming progressively harder to achieve in this day and age.

Discussing Run cant be done without mentioning its sister night HENCH, one of only a handful of genuine Dubstep nights in Bristol. HENCH has raised the bar for other promoters in terms of its bookings and vibe, and after moving from a mid-week to a weekend and now on to Native, 2009 is going to be a massive year for the twin promotions.

H.E.N.C.H is back with ya, and we have moved house!

You can now reach H.E.N.C.H. at Native, on the 3rd Friday of the month and we are now bi-monthly. So there might be less H.E.N.C.H. parties this year but we will certainly make up for that by making them bigger and better than ever!!

So last week was yet another total roadblock!! -Die's launch party for his new EP... Skate or Die, coming on his Clear Skyz label... alongside G Dub / Original Sin and Break... massive night!

You may have noticed Jakes' absense, who was booked somewhere else and gave us a chance to bring back Dread and Rage back again...

A little note about how the Run door works... had a lot of people asking about Q Jump and Guestlist last night so thought would clear things up for you...

Q Jump is for anyone keen enough to send us a message, it just means you can go straight in without queueing -its still full price!

Run guestlist is for people that work with us... whether thats djs or flyerers, anyone who does something for us goes on that list.

If you love Run and don't wana pay anymore then come chat to us, we're always looking for people to help out!

Queue jump is only valid till 11, OR until we're full whichever comes first!

You need to go to the left hand side of the club and give your name then go through and pay on the door...

Anyone sending requests you will receive a conformation message back if you are on the list.

12 months in and out of the clubs with D*Style - Zahir Photography

The exhibition is being put on to celebrate the achievements of Bristol’s EVER evolving drum and bass scene.

Zahir Photography began working with the drum and bass record label D*Style in June 2007.

Amber McCarthy, who has been compare to early Annie Leibovitz for her frank and gritty portraiture, will also be on hand to discuss her work and inspirations. All the images will be available for sale in various formats and there is the opportunity to have prints signed on the night.

The exhibition includes exclusive photos from the TC Evolution Live UK Tour which saw TC and his live band headline some of the UK’s premier night clubs and festivals in 2007.

Images from D*Styles busy weekly club night called ‘Run’ held at Native nightclub in Bristol will also be exhibited.
There will be photographs from D*Style artists press photo shoots, including Roni Size, MC Jakes and Distorted Minds. MC Jakes, DJ Eddie K and other artists will be at the exhibition at to sign prints.

There will be music from the D Style boys -and friends! It's free so come along!

Following the massive successes of HENCH001 and HENCH002, the Godfather of Bristol Dubstep moves aside for the third release on his HENCH imprint; this time around JAKES gives the floor to one of the hottest producers on the circuit: KOMONAZMUK.

BAD APPLE displays perfectly what is so exciting about the Dubstep movement right now, combining elements that wouldn't be out of place in a minimal Techno track and adding subtle flourishes that will strike a chord with HENCH's growing army of fans. Simply stunning.

LAST MISTAKE goes for a more straight-up Dubstep feel with skipping beats and echoed atmospherics that build a cinematic edge to another beautifully minimal track. KOMONAZMUK is clearly a dangerous man.

NUM - How did you get into dubstep and what inspired you to do so?
JAKES - I’ve always loved bass heavy music and right from the very first time I heard a dubstep track - a Horsepower 12" - I was hooked. My first solo ventures into the studio were supposed to be Hip Hop, but they mutated into my distinctive Dub sound.

NUM - What made you set up H.E.N.C.H.?
JAKES - I needed an outlet for my music; plus I have two wives an seven kids to feed!

NUM - Can you describe your sound?
JAKES - Can you?

NUM - ‘Warp 9’ is such a huge tune, a real personal favourite of mine, what inspired you to make it?
JAKES - The original of ‘Warp 9’ is called ‘Gate 9’ and that was inspired by a trip to Amsterdam. The sample is talking about the boarding gate for Amsterdam in an airport. ‘Warp 9’ is ‘Gate 9's big brother. The one that plays happy slaps for fun!

NUM - What is your favourite track in the dubstep scene at the moment?
JAKES - Anything by Mala.

NUM - What is your favourite track of all time? (any genre)
JAKES - ‘ANTI WAR DUB’!

NUM - Who is your favourite producer at the moment?
JAKES - It's a tossup between Mala, Peverlist or Stephan Bodzin.

NUM - What influences you as a producer?
JAKES - Vodka soda an bags a ‘erb.NUM - What do you prefer – DJing, MCing or producing, and why?

JAKES - Producing. Because I can stay at home!NUM - This is a bit of a random question but I got to ask! If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only have 3 things, what would they be?
JAKES - A strain of skunk that could survive, the ability to make fire and a woman.

NUM - Can you describe the feeling you get when you drop one of your own tunes at a dance and you see the crowd go nuts?
JAKES - It’s a combination of fear and satisfaction.

NUM - What can we see from H.E.N.C.H. this year? What are the plans?
JAKES - Total world domination, a shit load of killer twelves, some nifty garms, a mix album, maybe a solo one from one of the fam and a world tour.

NUM - You also run a night in Bristol called H.E.N.C.H. can you tell us a little about that, who have you had down and what is the crowd like?
JAKES - The night is running smooth and we already have a loyal base of attendees. Almost all the big hitters have been thru alongside some of what I think will be the stars of tomorrow.

NUM - Are there any raves that you would recommend?
JAKES - H.E.N.C.H. & D.M.Z

NUM - How do you see the current dubstep scene and where do you think it will be in 5 years time?
JAKES - It's healthy at the moment an all I can see is it growing stronger.NUM - Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

NUM - Most producers don't like to tell what they use to make their tunes on, but I got to ask! What do you use?

Here's a little info on Djunya for yas...

DJUNYA!

Over the years Djunya has played with various live bands and worked on dub/beat projects across the United States.

Djunya then began to play drum n' bass heavily throughout 1999. He was quickly noticed for his ability to program and cut mixes. His producing skills have been captivating listeners for a decade, and he has continued to move dance floors DJ'ing his Dubbed-out blend of BASS HEAVY BEATS...

Djunya's live mixes and sound productions cover the spectrums of deep moody basslines to etheric atmospheres.

His influences range from Reggae, Hip-Hop, Downtempo, Drum and Bass, and Hardcore. Djunya's sound palette is ever expanding as he continues to work with multiple artists,producers, and traditional musicians.

As for Scientist... he is a bit of a man of mystery, so we'll keep it that way just know that he will kill it tomorrow night so do not miss this one!!

Luke Envoy couldn't make it as he had to catch a flight, so Headhunter stepped in (big ups!)
we also had a set from Papa 'Ench! (the boy is too talented!), Wedge, Komonazmuk and Blazey -who killed it as always!

As it was day before good friday it was a loooooooong night and a BIG party... bring on next month!!!

So last night went to Penguin Dance @ Timbuk2 to see Coki... unfortunately he couldn't make it, luckily H.E.N.C.H. was around! Komon was just messing in studio (making house!!) So he came down and filled in... not sure how this ended as I had to go to Clockwork...

(heard from others that he SMASHED it thou... Jake's new tune -which I LOVE got 5 rewinds BIG!)

...with TC, looked nice and busy took as a little while to get wristbanded up and get backstage but we made it in the end.
This was a TC and Jakes booking and was a wicked set, Tom played real varied set including some of his bangers (tunes went off!), a house tune! (whats going on boys!) and of course some H.E.N.C.H maddness at the end. I even had a little wiggle on!

Think D*Minds were in Torquay last night...

no DSR gigs tonight think everyone actually out on a social one!!
